Charles worked in the public sector for over 30 years, principally in the Fire and Rescue service (from firefighter in Merseyside to Chief Fire Officer for Oxfordshire). Following this, he was CEO of the Fire Fighters charity, which is dedicated to the mental and physical welfare of injured firefighters and their families. Charles also served as a charity trustee and chair of a local charity in Oxford.

Currently he runs a commercial business based in Liverpool. Charles lives in Wheatley, married to Liz and has two adult children. His interests include karate, tai chi, mountain biking, reading, writing and sailing.
